Being a mom can be so stressful. I'm sure everyone worries whether they are doing the right things but I just decided I do a post talking about some of my motherhood worries.
#1 Separation Anxiety
Mitchel is going through a separation anxiety phase. He cries whenever we leave him. Usually if the Grandparents watch him he will eventually stop but nursery is a different story. I'm always second guessing myself thinking maybe we should do this or maybe we should do that. But luckily for now Eric is going with him to nursery. He doesn't seem to like other kids which makes me worry all in itself.
#2 Pregnancy and Medication
Recently I went to a new gp doctor to refill a prescription that I had been given by a specialist. First of all I went to a specialist I really liked. She put me on this specific medication because it was the best for pregnancy and had very minimal risks. Then she quit to be a stay-at-home mom (yay for her). So I tried another specialist and I was not impressed. I figured I might as well go to a gp, at least they are cheaper and the specialist said I would be on this medication all my life. Well the gp was not impressed that I was on this medication my third trimester. I think her exact words were "this is dangerous to be on this medicine during the third trimester of pregnancy. Did your obgyn say it was ok?" YES! He did actually....both my obgyn now and the one I had Mitchel with...along with the two specialists I saw. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Reluctantly she prescribed it. Even though we had researched it before with Mitchel and I have been taking minimal amounts of the medicine this sent me into alot of worry. Did Mitchel have effects from this medicine? Have I messed up this kid? Am I being selfish? Stupid doctor! I had also gone to another gp before Mitchel for some antibiotics and she freaked out on me and told me I could not take any medicine while pregnant. If only these doctors had been a little more sensitive to a "trying to do right mother to be" my life would be easier.
#3 No Talky
Mitchel still isn't talking really. He has a few words he might be saying but he is 20 months old and no regular words. The doctor suggested that we get him evaluated at his 18 month check up but we were sure he was about to break out in talking. It makes me worry about whether I am doing the right things to help him learn or if my medicine I took caused this. Hopefully soon he will start talking because it is frustrating both of us when he wants something and he does is grunt and point and all I do is guess. On a lighter note: it is pretty cute when he wants to listen to music and points to the cd player and dances.

Cari-- first of all, I think you are not alone in your worries! Seriously, this past week w/ benjamin has been hell! G( did I say that? --- yes, because that was what it was). We are having sone behavioral issues that we are working on, and sometimes I wonder if I am even fit to be a parent. I am sure that you didnot mess your kid up w/ your meds. Really, if there is one thing i have learned through robs cancer/ thyroid ordeal is that all Dr's are not the same or even know what they are talking about, or up to date with their research on latest medical foundings. If you researched it, and you had four other dr's confirm it, I think u can be confident in your choice. Thirdly, all kids learn/ develop differently. Boys especially . Often boys talk later than girls. I am sure mitchel is fine, but it never hurts to get them checked out ( Kiersta & I were talking about this about our own kids). When I taught school, it was amazing how many kids had speech delays ( minor to severe). Alot of them were super bright kids and nothing else was developmentally wrong. I think their life at school would have beenalot easier if their parents had done some early intervention. I think that you are an excellent mom b/ c you are concerned and are worried. I am sure mitchel will come around soon :) and the nursery thing? Umm I think like more than half the kids in bens class have parents with them in their. It's normal. It's kind of a bad thing that they don't start nursery until 18 months, because that's when alot of kids start to have separation anxiety, and let's be honest, have you seen nursery? It can be aliitle scary! Hang in there! You are an awesome mom! Never ever doubt that! Mitchel is so lucky to have you as a mommy! O had to tell myself this a miiliion times last week--- that I'm not a bad mom, and that im not alone with these feelings! Sorry for the novel! Hang it there--- you're doing great!
i just remembered I need to email you pics. uh, working on that.
yep, doctors suck sometimes. If I remember correctly, some separation anxiety is a good thing...but don't quote me on that. I stopped paying attention in classes about 2 years ago. And seriously, i would look into sign language. Someone I know is having similar problems with their boy and are starting speech therapy. They told them to start signing. Just a thought. And really it doesn't matter because M is so dang cute!
It's ok to worry, but not too much. I've been to so many doctors and every one has told me something different, so I think you are right to do the research for yourself and make your own decisions.
At 18 months, my doctor told me grunting and pointing IS communication. Sounds like Mitchell knows how to get what he wants. Also, there's nothing wrong with getting your child evaluated. I am taking Collin in next month to get evaluated for speech. At first I felt really embarrassed that I wasn't teaching my own child to speak correctly. Then I realized, these people have studied speech for 4-8 years and probably practiced teaching it for ages. I didn't take a day of child development classes in college. Why shouldn't I get some help?
Also, my dad spoke with a woman who works with autistic kids. She told my dad that delayed speech indicates pretty much nothing. It's really normal for kids to not say a word long after their 2nd birthday.
See no worries Cari-Ann. I think you're doing a great job.
